Check Counselor Credentials

To find out if the person performing counseling has earned the credentials and passed the requirements of  a state licensed counselor, first determine which of the the areas of counseling that fit your situation and click on that description.

1. The counselor is working in a K-12 school setting

School State Licensed Counselor Departments of Education

School state certified/licensed counselors have a minimum of a master’s degree in school counseling making them uniquely qualified to address all students’ academic, personal/social and career development needs by designing, implementing, evaluating and enhancing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success.   School state certified/licensed counselors receive their certificate/license from the state board of education, you can find a list by state at the following site http://www.counseling.org/news/news-release-archives/by-year/2008/2008/03/02/state-school-counselor-certification-licensure-agencies

2.The counselor is assisting with career needs and issues.

State Licensed Counselor Credentials and Counselor Boards

To find out if the credentials of the person counseling you are those of a state licensed counselor, you can find your state at  www.counseling.org/knowledge-center/licensure-requirements/state-professional-counselor-licensure-boards  At this site you can review that state's license designation. If you have state specific questions about counselor practice or want to verify a counselor's license status, you can visit the state board website by clicking on the link provided.
